Charges filed in Christmas Eve chase with Kansas City police
After a high-speed chase and crash that left one person seriously injured on Christmas Eve, a 26-year-old Kansas City man faces several criminal charges, Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker announced Friday.
Baker charged Deonte Paul with second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, resisting a lawful stop, possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor charge of marijuana possession.
A Kansas City police officer began following the vehicle Paul was driving on Thursday because it looked like one involved in an armed robbery, according to court records.
Paul drove at high speeds and ran red lights as the officer gave chase. When the officer stopped giving chase, Paul’s vehicle hit another one near 75th Street and Holmes. He was allegedly armed with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun. He and three other people were reportedly injured in the crash, one of them seriously.
Prosecutors have requested a $250,000 bond.
