Suspicious passenger behavior diverts flight to KCI

A Southwest Airlines from Indianapolis to Los Angeles was diverted to Kansas City International airport Sunday because of suspicious behavior on the part of several passengers, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

The passengers involved were removed from the plane and three people were detained for questioning.

The incident occurred on Southwest flight 5929, which landed at KCI about 7:50 a.m. The flight was allowed to continue on its way about 9:20 a.m.

“The flight crew diverted the flight to Kansas City out of an abundance of caution based upon suspicious behavior displayed by several passengers,” FBI spokeswoman Bridget Patton said in a news release.

“As a further safety measure, the remaining passengers were deplaned and K-9 teams ‘swept’ the aircraft,” the release said.

Patton later described the passengers’ behavior as unruly. She would not be more specific. The passengers who were detained were allowed to continue on a later flight.
