Kansas City man charged with child abuse after 6-month-old son is severely injured

A Kansas City man has been charged with felony child abuse after his 6-month-old son suffered severe head injuries at home.

Clay County prosecutors charged Michael C. Nagel, 32, with one count of felony child abuse this week.

The charge stemmed from a Sept. 1 incident that occurred when Nagel was at home with his son. Nagel had called 911 to report that his son was injured. Emergency crews found the boy breathing abnormally and without a pulse, according to court documents.

The boy was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital, where a doctor told police that the boy’s symptoms were consistent with having been shaken. Nagel told police that he dropped the child.

Kansas City police arrested Nagel and questioned him on Sept. 1. Clay County prosecutors filed the charge against him on Tuesday.
