A Merriam teenager has been ordered to a state mental hospital after pleading guilty to kidnapping and attempting to rape a woman earlier this year.

Clarence D. Hartnell IV, 18, pleaded guilty Wednesday in Johnson County District Court and was ordered committed to the Larned State Hospital for a presentence evaluation.

A judge ordered the evaluation to determine if Hartnell needs psychiatric treatment and care.

Depending on the evaluation’s findings, he either will remain at the hospital for continued care or be returned to Johnson County for sentencing.

In the September incident, Hartnell arranged for a 21-year-old woman working as an escort to come to his apartment. After she arrived, he threatened her with a knife, held her against her will and assaulted her.

He initially was charged with attempted murder and rape, but the charges were amended to aggravated kidnapping and attempted rape as part of a plea agreement.
