KC police and others recognized for their service and bravery
A team of Kansas City police officers and detectives was honored Monday for work that led to the capture of the man suspected in the series of highway shootings that injured three.
They were among about 200 law enforcement officers and civilians given awards during a ceremony at the Kansas City Police Academy.
Federal, state and municipal law enforcement officers were among those honored for helping Kansas City police identify and arrest Mohammed Whitaker, who faces numerous criminal charges in the highway shootings case.
Detective Brad Bailey received the police department’s Purple Heart medal for injuries sustained when his police vehicle was struck and overturned on March 2012 by a motorist fleeing police.
Three officers were recognized for their work in helping track down a serial rapist who targeted a neighborhood in the Northeast area of Kansas City.
Others honored Monday night included several officers who rescued people from a collapsing building on Independence Avenue, and two officers who volunteered their free time helping residents of a homeless camp in south Kansas City find permanent housing and obtian social service assistance.
