Merriam police officers took two people into custody after shots were fired near Shawnee Mission Medical Center on Thursday morning.

No one was injured in the incident at the Georgetown Apartments in the 9100 block of West 73rd Street, just north of the medical center.

Merriam Police Chief Mike Daniels said construction workers on the north side of the hospital called police about 6:30 a.m. Thursday to report that they believed someone was shooting at them from the apartment complex.

As officers arrived, they also heard shots and saw someone pointing a weapon in their direction, Daniels said.

The officers took cover and called for backup.

Dozens of officers from other Johnson County police agencies helped Merriam police cordon off the area. Access to the hospital was restricted on the north side, but the south side of the facility was not affected, Daniels said.

About 8:15 a.m., after officers made telephone contact with occupants of the apartment where the shots originated, a woman came outside and was arrested. Thirty minutes later, a man came out and was also arrested.

Police remained on the scene for several more hours until they could make sure no one else was in the apartment.

Daniels said he was pleased with the level of cooperation from surrounding police agencies.

“I’ve never seen anything like it anywhere else,” he said.

Detectives were following up with the investigation before submitting reports to the district attorney’s office for possible charges.
