Wichita police say a 26-year-old man has been arrested in the assault of a woman who was set on fire at a park.

The man was booked early Thursday on suspicion of rape and attempted first-degree murder in the attack Friday night at Fairmount Park.

Lt. James Espinoza says the 36-year-old woman remains in critical condition at a Wichita hospital.

Firefighters responding to a grass fire found the woman with severe burns over 55 percent of her body and cuts on her head. The attack occurred near the Wichita State campus but police say the woman was not associated with the university.

It is unclear whether rewards totaling $5,000 offered for information in the brutal attack led to the arrest.
