Defendant in shooting of Overland Park dog appears in court
A Lee’s Summit man accused of shooting a therapy dog during an Overland Park home burglary made his first court appearance Friday.
Matthew W. Oden is charged in Johnson County District Court with burglary, theft of a firearm and animal cruelty.
Oden, 32, allegedly broke into a house in the 6600 block of West 132nd Terrace on Oct. 6 and shot Meeko, a dog trained to provide therapy to nursing home residents.
Meeko was shot in the face but survived.
Oden was arrested earlier this week in Kansas City. A reward of up to $12,000 had been offered in the case.
Authorities have not said whether anyone collected the reward.
