Man is arrested in shooting of beloved therapy dog Meeko

A man charged with shooting a beloved therapy dog in the face during a home burglary was arrested Tuesday, Overland Park police said.

Police arrested Matthew Oden, 32, who was charged with burglary, theft and a felony count of cruelty to animals.

Oden is accused of shooting Meeko, an 8-year-old golden retriever-cocker spaniel mix, during the burglary of a home in the 6600 block of West 132nd Terrace on Oct. 6.

The dog suffered serious injuries but is expected to recover.

The day Meeko was shot, his owner came home in the afternoon and found the home ransacked and the pet injured.

The certified therapy dog works with residents of a senior living center, said his owner, who asked that his name not be used.

The homeowner said friends, neighbors and even some strangers have donated to raise the reward for information in the case to $12,000.

A court date had not yet been set for Oden. He spent time in prison for several burglary and drug convictions in Missouri and Kansas from 2005 to 2010.
