A man who authorities said was carrying a rifle and was believed to have fired at a homeowner in Dayton, Mo., was shot Friday by Cass County deputies responding to a call.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office said in a release Saturday that deputies were summoned to a home in the 33000 block of East 355th Street about 3:30 p.m. Friday after they had been told he had shot at the resident. The release said the deputies asked the man to surrender peacefully. But the man shot at them, the release said.
The deputies returned the fire, striking the man with bullets “several times,” according to the release. He was the only person injured in the exchange of gunfire.
The wounded man was flown to a Kansas City hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday.
The deputies involved were placed on paid administrative leave, a routine action when law enforcement officers are involved in a shooting.
