Machete-swinging man shot and killed by KCK police is identified
Authorities have identified a machete-swinging man shot and killed by a Kansas City, Kan., police officer Saturday night as Carlos Davenport, 50.
Just before 10 p.m., police received a 911 call from a woman who said a man was trying to stab her sister with a machete.
Two officers who responded to the 1100 block of Washington Avenue heard screaming as they rushed up the stairs to a second-floor apartment. The officers first encountered the woman who had called 911 and her sister. Then Davenport charged out of the apartment doorway with a machete raised above his head in an apparent attempt to strike the women, according to the police report.
Davenport ignored the officers’ commands to drop the machete, police said. Fearing for the safety of the women, an officer shot Davenport, according to police.
The incident remains under investigation.
