Police identify two men killed after being struck while walking on Interstate 70
Independence police have identified the two pedestrians killed late Wednesday when they were struck by vehicles along Interstate 70 as brothers Jesse Winters, 28, of Independence and Jacob Winters, 24, of Sugar Creek.
The brothers were walking west on the interstate near Missouri 291 late Wednesday when they were hit by vehicles, including an Independence patrol car. No new details were released Friday and the accident remains under investigation.
The patrol car was eastbound on I-70 when the officer saw a disabled vehicle with its emergency lights activated. The officer exited at U.S. 291, turned around and was driving west on I-70 when his car struck one of the victims, said Tom Gentry, police spokesman.
A witness told police that a semitrailer struck the other victim.
