Two juveniles suspected in a Shawnee carjacking are injured in a crash
Two juveniles were injured early Thursday after wrecking a car stolen in a carjacking outside a Shawnee grocery store.
The robbery was reported at 11:55 p.m. Wednesday outside Hy-Vee at 13550 W. 63rd St.
The victim told Shawnee police that two people robbed him of his wallet, cellphone and car. A short time later, a Shawnee officer saw the car on Shawnee Mission Parkway and began pursuing it.
The officer ended the pursuit after the 2010 Honda Accord ran a red light at high speed.
About 20 minutes later, officers found the car wrecked near Kansas 7 and Shawnee Mission Parkway with two injured juveniles still inside.
One remained in the hospital Thursday morning. The other had been treated and released to the custody of juvenile authorities.
Later Thursday, prosecutors charged 17-year-old James Gant of Shawnee with aggravated robbery and attempted kidnapping. Prosecutors also filed a motion seeking to have him tried as an adult.
The other teen was expected to be released from the hospital and charged Friday.
Police said the robbery victim was not injured.
