Kansas City teen accused of fatally shooting man as he ran away
A teenager got into a fight with a man before fatally shooting him as he ran away Friday, Jackson County prosecutors allege.
Prosecutors charged Marquiveon D. Washington, 17, on Saturday with first-degree murder and other crimes in connection with the Friday shooting death of Justin Williams, 22, of Kansas City.
According to court records:
Witnesses saw a Dodge Neon run into a parked car about 10:30 a.m. Friday in the 6600 block of Monroe Avenue in Kansas City. Two men got out and fought. At one point, one man started to run away. The other man, who was wearing an orange hoodie, pulled a gun and fired four or five shots at the fleeing man.
Police found Williams on the pavement. He died at a hospital.
Officers arrested Washington after a witness apparently saw him toss a gun and an orange hoodie into some bushes behind a Monroe Avenue home and walk away. That witness watched Washington until officers stopped him. Police recovered the handgun and hoodie. They matched shell casings from the scene to the gun.
When questioned by detectives, Washington first said the gun had belonged to Williams but then said it was his.
