Lathrop middle-schooler arrested for pulling out handgun

A Lathrop middle school student was taken into custody Friday after he brandished a handgun during lunch.

The incident happened about 11:30 a.m. at the end of the lunch period inside the school’s cafeteria. The weapon was not loaded. No one was harmed.

Deputies with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office took the boy into custody.

“Everybody’s safe,” said Superintendent Chris Fine.

Details on how the incident unfolded were not available. Fine said the student was sitting with other students. School officials do not know what prompted the incident.

The Missouri Highway Patrol is investigating.
