Kansas City police are warning that criminals claiming to be with the Police Department are calling people seeking money.

About 20 people have reported getting the calls over the last several days, police said.

The scammer has been able to “spoof” the Police Department’s main phone number, 816-234-5000, to appear on the caller ID of those receiving the calls.

In the calls, the criminal claims that a warrant will be issued if the resident does not send money to take care of a problem, such as an overdue bill or the owing of back taxes.

Police said members of the department would never make those kinds of demands for money.

People who receive such calls should not give financial or personal information and should report the calls to police.
