Lansing inmate who attacked corrections officers with broomstick sentenced
An inmate in Lansing, Kansas, was sentenced to almost five years in prison Wednesday after attempting to injure two correctional officers with a broomstick.
Elijah Reed, 25, pleaded guilty to two counts each of aggravated battery and aggravated assault on May 27, according to a Leavenworth County plea document.
According to a news release from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson, Reed was sentenced to 57 months, or four years and nine months, in prison for the incident.
Corrections officers at the Lansing Correctional Facility were called to a medium-custody housing unit in the jail at 12:45 p.m. on Nov. 13, 2024, where they found Reed, Thompson said. Reed was not authorized to be in the area.
Two correctional officers approached Reed, who “advanced toward them while holding a broomstick,” Thompson said. Reed struck an officer twice in the forearm with the broomstick, which shattered upon impact with the officer’s arm.
With the broken broomstick, Reed attempted to strike a second officer in “the abdomen and neck area,” Thompson said. Reed attempted to stab another officer in the face.
Reed is expected to appear for a review hearing on July 29, according to court records.
