A man who had been missing from Independence since May 10 was found dead in a northeast Kansas City residence, leading to a homicide investigation.

Officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded to a residence in the 3500 block of Smart Avenue after receiving a tip on May 23 from the Independence Police Department regarding a missing person, Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the department, said in a news release Friday.

Investigators found Jonathon Brown, 45, dead in the residence, Gonzalez said.

Brown was last seen in the area of 23rd Street and Blue Ridge Cutoff in Independence around 11:30 a.m. on May 10, the Independence Police Department said in a Facebook post.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office has ruled Brown’s death a homicide, Gonzalez said. The case is under investigation, and detectives are “making headway in identifying a person of interest.”

Anyone with information regarding Brown’s death is asked to call homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS, Gonzalez said. Information submitted through the TIPS Hotline may be eligible for a reward of up to $25,000.
