Jury finds 65-year-old Kansas man guilty of kicking in door, killing neighbor
A Leavenworth County jury convicted a 65-year-old Lansing man of kicking in his neighbor’s door and fatally shooting him last summer, according to the Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office.
After a three-day jury trial that ended Wednesday, the jury found Dennis J. Brockenshire guilty of first-degree murder and aggravated burglary in the death of 51-year-old Andy T. Kenyon, 51 in his home in the Parkwood Court Mobile Home Court near North Main and Helen streets in Lansing.
On June 28, 2025, Lansing police officers responded to reports of a possible fatal shooting in the mobile home community, according to a news release from Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.
There, officers saw damage to the front door of Kenyon’s home and a shoe print that appeared to indicate that someone had forced their way into the home. Inside, officers found Kenyon on a couch. He had been shot, and there was no pulse.
Leavenworth County emergency medical services and the Lansing Fire Department responded to the area and confirmed that Kenyon was dead.
Based on statements from neighbors, police identified Brockenshire as a possible suspect. During their investigation, police tied Brockenshire to the crime. Neighbors had said that before the day of the killing, Brockenshire allegedly had commented about kicking in Kenyon’s door and shooting him.
Police also matched ammunition found at the scene to ammunition found in Brockenshire’s closet. His hands and the clothing he was wearing the day of the homicide tested positive for gunshot residue, and blood found on his T-shirt was consistent with Kenyon’s DNA.
Brockenshire was charged and arrested in late October, and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
“In a tragedy that shook a neighborhood, the truth was pieced together with the help of other neighbors and the careful work of law enforcement,” Thompson said in the news release. “Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family and friends.”
A sentencing hearing for Brockenshire was set for 1 p.m. July 10.
