An Independence man was sentenced to seven years in prison Tuesday for his role in a fatal car crash in east Kansas City that left one pedestrian dead.

Jonathan Stone, 32, pleaded guilty Friday to driving while intoxicated resulting in serious physical injury, according to a sentencing document.

On Tuesday, a Jackson County judge sentenced Stone to seven years in the Missouri Department of Corrections, with credit for time served, according to the document.

On June 4, officers with the Kansas City Police Department were called to the area of East 38th Terrace South and Blue Ridge Cutoff around 5:30 p.m. on reports of an injury crash, according to a probable cause statement filed in support of Stone’s arrest.

An investigation revealed Stone was driving “erratically” in a silver Mercury at a high rate of speed, changing lanes and passing other vehicles, the statement said.

Stone lost control of the vehicle, which left the road and struck a pedestrian, according to the court document. The pedestrian was taken to a hospital, where he died July 7. His cause of death was listed as “complications of blunt force injuries.”

At the scene of the crash, Stone admitted to an investigator that he had consumed alcohol before operating the vehicle, according to the statement. He said that prior to the crash, he was working on his truck “and drinking alcohol, too much.”

Stone’s BAC measured .114, the probable cause statement said.
