Man who stole truck charged with murder in 2024 hit-and-run, court records show
A Kansas City man is facing a second-degree murder charge in a fatal 2024 hit-and-run, during which he allegedly ran over a man after stealing his car.
Anthony Mattox, 46, faces charges of second-degree murder and stealing in the hit-and-run on July 17, 2024, that left one man dead, according to a criminal complaint filed in Jackson County court Friday.
On July 17, 2024, officers with the Kansas City Police Department were called to a location in Jackson County just after 1 p.m. on reports of a vehicle fatality, according to a probable cause statement filed in support of the charges filed against Mattox.
The location of the incident and the victim’s identity were redacted from the probable cause statement.
When officers arrived, they found the victim lying in the road, the statement said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Footage from a dash camera provided by a witness working near the scene of the incident showed the victim and a man, later identified as Mattox, working to unload a motorcycle from a trailer attached to a black Chevrolet truck, according to the court document.
Mattox exited the trailer and entered the driver’s side of the victim’s white Ford 350, according to the dash camera footage. The victim ran to the vehicle, where he struggled with Mattox for control.
As the Ford drove away, the victim fell from the side of the truck and was run over by its back tires, the statement said. The black Chevrolet also left the scene.
The next day, investigators found the victim’s truck abandoned, the statement said.
On July 19, 2024, officers found the Chevrolet parked in a driveway, according to the court document. Investigators learned the truck had been stolen.
A man in the residence allegedly told investigators that on the day of the incident, his girlfriend loaned the Chevrolet to Mattox, the statement said.
In an interview with detectives, the woman said Mattox told her to drive away as he and the victim unloaded the motorcycle from the trailer, the statement said.
Months later, on Oct. 9, 2024, she contacted detectives and said Mattox intended to steal a motorcycle from the residence, according to the court documen, and he later admitted to her that he ran over the victim.
Detectives interviewed Mattox regarding the incident on July 24, 2025, while he was incarcerated, according to the document. He initially told investigators he had “no knowledge” of the incident. When asked about the victim’s truck, which was recovered near Mattox’s residence, Mattox asked to go back to his jail cell. He allegedly refused to consent to a DNA swab.
Mattox’s DNA was found on the steering wheel of the victim’s truck, the statement said.
Mattox is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash-only bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing. He is set to appear for a bond review hearing on May 6.
