A man accused of bringing a loaded gun into a Blue Springs elementary school Thursday is facing an unlawful use of a weapon charge in Jackson County court. The caller who reported the incident told police she believed the man was coming to the school to kill her.

Cory Adams, 38, faces one count of unlawful use of a weapon after he allegedly brought a loaded firearm into Sunny Pointe Elementary School in Blue Springs, according to a Jackson County complaint document.

Officers with the Independence Police Department were called to they school, at 3920 Northwest R.D. Mize Road, just after 8:50 a.m. Thursday after receiving a report that a man was in the school with a gun, according to a probable cause statement filed in support of Adams’ arrest.

The caller told officers the man, later identified as Adams, had allegedly threatened to shoot her previously, the statement said. She was in the school’s dropoff line when Adams pulled up next to her.

The caller told investigators she believed Adams was “coming to the school to kill her,” the statement said.

Responding officers found Adams in the school’s front office, where an officer confirmed he had a firearm, according to the probable cause statement. He was detained after a brief struggle with officers.

In Adams’ waistband, officers found a gun without a serial number, referred to as a “ghost gun,” loaded with 15 bullets, the statement said.

At the time, representatives with the Blue Springs School District and Independence Police Department said they do not believe Adams caused a legitimate threat to safety at the school.

In a letter sent to families regarding the incident, school officials said Adams was detained before the school day began.

Adams is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $75,000 cash-only bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing. He is set to appear for a bond review hearing in Independence court on April 28.
