Lawrence man arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly admitting to killing
Lawrence police arrested a 25-year-old man Saturday after he allegedly admitted — during a 911 call — to killing his grandmother, according to a news release.
Officers responded to a home just southwest of Clinton Parkway and Crestline Drive just before 2:00 a.m. Saturday, according to Laura McCabe, a police spokesperson.
Dispatchers told officers that the man who called 911 confessed to strangling his grandmother to death, McCabe said.
When officers knocked on the door, Marcus L. Cassella opened the door. McCabe said police arrested him without incident.
Inside the home, officers found a 70-year-old woman unresponsive in a bed. Paramedics responded and pronounced her dead at the scene.
Officers also found Cassella’s 24-year-old brother unharmed in another bedroom with the door shut, McCabe said.
Police have not yet publicly identified the woman who died while the family is being notified of her death.
Douglas County booking records show Cassella is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder. No bond has been set yet, and online court records show no official charges have been filed as of Saturday afternoon.
An investigation into the woman’s death is ongoing.
