Person of interest in custody after fatal pedestrian hit-and-run north of Liberty
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has apprehended a potential person of interest Monday evening after a pedestrian was killed in an early morning hit-and-run in Kansas City’s Northland.
At about 7:10 a.m. Monday, a truck driver on Interstate 35 reported seeing someone lying on Edgar Petty Road, which runs parallel to the highway, north of Northeast 116th Street, according to Sarah Boyd, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.
Deputies responded to the area just north of Liberty and found a man dead on the road. It appeared that a vehicle had struck him and fled the area, Boyd said.
Deputies closed the road for several hours while investigators collected evidence. The Platte County Sheriff’s Office assisted with surveying the crash scene.
Detectives were working to identify the man and notify his next of kin.
Based on evidence recovered at the scene, the sheriff’s office believes the vehicle involved in the crash was a 2013-2018 Ford Focus, Boyd said. The vehicle should show signs of fresh damage.
Anyone with information about the fatal hit-and-run crash is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477) or the Clay County Sheriff’s Office’s investigations unit at 816-407-3728.
