Police investigate fire involving ‘incendiary device’ at Wyandotte County Lake

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department is investigating a fire at Wyandotte County Lake on Wednesday that might have been started with an “incendiary device.”

According to a news release from department spokesperson Carlos Ulloa, a witness told police that they heard a “loud boom” at the lake just after 5 p.m. They saw a man wearing St. Patrick’s Day-themed accessories run from the area shortly thereafter.

A small brush fire ignited in the area, and the police department, the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department responded to the fire, quickly extinguishing it, Ulloa said.

First responders found a “small incendiary device” at the scene, Ulloa said. No injuries were reported.

The Kansas City, Kansas Police Department is investigating the incident, Ulloa said. Anyone with information is asked to call the anonymous Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
