A Kansas City man accused of stealing a Greyhound bus this week will face several theft-related charges after allegedly causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage to the bus facility.

Preston R. Reiff, 21, is charged with stealing, first-degree tampering with a motor vehicle and first-degree property damage, according to a criminal complaint.

On Tuesday, Kansas City police were called to a Greyhound bus station on reports that a bus had been stolen, according to a probable cause statement in support of Reiff’s arrest.

Witnesses at the bus station told investigators that just before 10:30 p.m., a suspect, allegedly Reiff, took the bus from the depot’s back lot before he struck a wall, automatic gate and two signs, the statement said.

Officers attempted to stop the bus near Interstate 29 and Northwest 56th Street, but Reiff allegedly “refused to stop,” the statement said. Reiff was eventually apprehended after stop sticks were deployed near I-29 and Northwest Tiffany Springs Parkway in Platte County.

Reiff was taken into custody “without further incident,” the statement said.

Greyhound employees told officers that damage to the bus facility totaled over $55,000, the statement said. Damage to the bus is still being assessed.

Reiff is being held in the Jackson County Detention Center on a $30,000 cash-only bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing. No further court dates are set in his case.
