KC middle-schooler in custody after allegedly bringing two guns to school
A student at a middle school in Kansas City’s Antioch Acres neighborhood was taken into custody at the school on Friday morning after allegedly bringing two guns onto campus.
At 7:40 a.m. Friday, administrators at Northgate Middle School notified the school’s resource deputy that a student had informed them that another student in the school potentially had a firearm, Sarah Boyd, public relations manager for the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, said in an email to The Star.
The student suspected of having the firearm was removed from class, and the school resource deputy searched their bag, Boyd said. Inside, the deputy located two revolvers and ammunition.
The gun was not loaded, Boyd said, and a preliminary investigation determined that there was no threat to specific students or the school.
The school resource deputy took the student into custody, and they were transported to the Clay County Juvenile Justice Center, Boyd said.
In an email sent to families Friday afternoon, Northgate Middle School Principal Theo Fundermann III said students were under “lock and teach” protocol during the incident, but eventually “continued on with their day as usual.”
Those involved in the incident, Fundermann said, will receive “appropriate consequences in alignment with our Board policies.”
Additional staff and security personnel were present at the school throughout the rest of the school day, including during student dismissal, Fundermann said.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, Boyd said.
