Kansas City high school student detained after bringing firearm on campus

A student at a Kansas City high school was detained Wednesday morning after allegedly bringing a weapon on school grounds.

Officers with the Kansas City Police Department responded to Hogan Preparatory Academy High School just after 11:30 a.m., Alayna Gonzalez, a spokesperson for the department, said in an email to The Star.

An on-site security officer was alerted that a male student had brought a gun to the school and detained him, Gonzalez said. The security officer located the handgun.

“Keeping our students, teachers and staff safe is a priority, and one we take very seriously,” a spokesperson for Hogan Preparatory Academy said in an email to The Star Thursday.

The spokesperson said the school could not “comment on any discipline matters involving students.”

Neither the Kansas City Police Department nor Hogan Preparatory Academy provided details regarding the circumstances surrounding the student’s detainment.
