Independence man sentenced for running over KCPD officer with ATV in 2025

An Independence man was sentenced in Jackson County court Thursday after he ran over a Kansas City police officer with an ATV during a traffic stop in 2025.

Kendall Coleman, 28, pleaded guilty Thursday to charges of second-degree assault and aggravated fleeing a stop or detention causing physical injury, according to a guilty plea document filed in Jackson County court.

Coleman was sentenced to seven years in prison for one count of second-degree assault and 12 years in prison for one count of aggravated fleeing, according to court documents. His sentences will run concurrently.

Kansas City police conducted a traffic stop just before 7 p.m. on April 12, 2025, on a group of ATVs and motorcycles near Truman Road and Main Street, near T-Mobile Center, according to a probable cause statement in support of Coleman’s arrest.

During the stop, an officer attempted to place the driver of a black and lime green Yamaha Raptor 700, later identified as Coleman, into custody, the statement said.

Court documents said Coleman reversed his ATV, knocking the officer to the ground, before he continued to reverse, running over the officer’s leg. When the officer attempted to stand up, Coleman lifted the vehicle into a wheelie, striking the officer in the face.

The officer fell backward, and the ATV stayed in a wheelie until Coleman was over the officer, court documents said. Coleman then dropped onto the front wheel of the ATV and accelerated forward, striking the officer with all four tires of the vehicle.

Coleman fled the scene, and the officer was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, the probable cause statement said.

Officers eventually found Coleman in a gravel parking lot near Southwest Boulevard and 31st Street, where they attempted to conduct a car check of the ATV, records said. Coleman then fled the scene, traveling west on Southwest Boulevard.

Officers followed Coleman into Wyandotte County, where they lost sight of him before finding him again and initiating a second pursuit, according to the probable cause statement.

Coleman drove north in southbound lanes and was weaving in traffic when officers lost sight of him for the final time, according to the probable cause statement.

According to court documents, investigators received a tip on April 14, 2025, that the man who attempted to run over the officer was Coleman. The person who provided the information told police an acquaintance of Coleman’s gave them the information.

City surveillance footage showed Coleman driving an ATV matching the vehicle’s description, according to the probable cause statement. Coleman eventually entered a liquor store, where surveillance footage captured his face, and officers were able to identify him through a store receipt and a previous criminal booking photo.

Cellphone data also placed Coleman at the scene of the assault, according to court documents.

Coleman has previously been convicted of six felonies, according to the probable cause statement, two being unlawful use of a weapon.

He is being held in the Jackson County Jail, according to the jail’s inmate listing.
