Kansas City man accused of shooting person breaking into his car
A Kansas City man accused of shooting a person who was allegedly attempting to break into his vehicle was charged with unlawful use of a weapon in Jackson County court Sunday.
Connor Walters, 31, is charged with unlawful use of a weapon resulting in death or injury and armed criminal action, according to a Jackson County court document.
Walters called the Kansas City Police Department around 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 1, according to a probable cause statement in support of Walters’ arrest.
Walters told officers he shot a person who “tried breaking into his vehicle,” which was parked in his driveway.
In the phone call, Walters told 911 operators he fired shots at people breaking into his vehicle and he “‘got’ one of them,” according to the probable cause statement.
When operators asked if the people shot at him, Walters allegedly said he shot at them, according to the probable cause statement.
Court documents allege Walters said he had “film” of the incident, and that the suspects attempted to hit his vehicle 15 minutes prior.
“Then they came up and my back window is broke,” court documents state Walters said. “I unleashed a couple of shots, because I thought I saw they had a handgun when they were getting in the car, and then they drove off.”
Video surveillance obtained by police showed Walters’ driveway and street in front of his residence, according to the probable cause statement. The victim approached Walters’ vehicle around 1:30 a.m.
The victim allegedly began to attempt to break a driver’s side window, the statement said. Walters yelled at the victim, and they began to run toward the vehicle they arrived in.
Walters then fired several shots towards the victim, according to the statement. The victim fell to the ground, and Walters allegedly approached them and began to yell at them.
Officers arrived at the scene, where they located a victim lying in the street with several gunshot wounds, according to the statement. The victim was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Walters remained at the scene, where he allegedly told officers he saw the victim breaking into his vehicle, so he fired 11 rounds toward the victim, according to the probable cause statement.
In the road, investigators located a black glove, black clothing, an orange vape pen and an orange window-break tool, the statement said.
Walters’ car had a large hole in the back driver’s side window, the statement said. A black handgun and a pocketknife were located on the back of the car.
Officers found 10 shell casings at the scene and an empty gun magazine, according to the probable cause statement. When officers asked to interview Walters, he declined and requested an attorney.
Walters is being held in the Jackson County Jail on a $150,000 10% bond, according to the jail’s inmate listing. He is set to appear for a bond review hearing on Feb. 11.
