Man shot and killed in parking lot outside south Kansas City apartment complex
A man was shot to death in a south Kansas City neighborhood Sunday afternoon, according to the Kansas City Police Department.
At around 2 p.m., police arrived at the Ridge at Chestnut Apartments, which is in the Santa Fe Hills neighborhood near 87th Street and Holmes Road in Kansas City, Phil DiMartino, KCPD spokesperson, wrote in an email.
An adult man was found in a parking lot within the apartment complex with gunshot wounds. Officers and Kansas City Fire Department EMS gave first aid, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to DiMartino.
KCPD detained a person of interest for questioning. According to DiMartino, initial reports indicate multiple people were arguing in the parking lot, which lead to someone firing the bullets that struck the victim.
The name of the victim has not been released.
The homicide is the sixth killing in 2026 in Kansas City, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. The city had seen 10 homicides by January 18 of last year.
