A victim is being treated in a Kansas City hospital after a police-involved shooting Saturday afternoon in Manhattan, Kansas.

Two deputies with the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office were called around 3 p.m. after a homeowner reported their shed and garage had been damaged by gunfire, according to a release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigations. While taking the report, the deputies heard gunshots in the area and additional ones as they approached 8655 Josie Lane.

The deputies believed the gunshots were coming from the residence at 8655 Josie Lane, according to the release. They identified themselves as law enforcement and gave several commands to the shooter, the KBI release said.

A man, later identified by law enforcement as Brian Lovgren, 38, came out of the door with a handgun. One of the deputies fired multiple times, hitting Lovgren, according to the release. Life-saving measures were done at the scene and Lovegren was transported to a Kansas City hospital.

Lovegren underwent surgery and is currently in critical condition. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations and Crime Scene Response Team were called to investigate at 3:50 p.m. When the investigation is over, the case findings will be presented to the Pottawatomie County Attorney to determine charges.
