Man stabbed to death on New Year’s Day in Johnson County home. Suspect arrested

A suspect is in custody after a man died in an apparent stabbing at a Gardner residence New Year’s Day, police said.

Officers with the Gardner Police Department responded around 1:46 a.m. Thursday to the 16900 block of Walter Street on a call about a disturbance, police said in a news release. When they arrived, officers found a man who appeared to be suffering from stab wounds, a news release said.

The man later died from his injuries, police said.

Investigators classified the killing as a homicide, according to the news release.

Police have not yet publicly identified the man who died while they notify family members of his death.

A suspect has been taken into custody and there is no ongoing threat to the community, police said.

Johnson County Sheriff’s Office records indicate Kavin B. Moreno was booked into jail at 9:05 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of first-degree murder. He is due to appear in court 1:30 p.m. Friday.

As of Friday morning, no charges had been filed.
