The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating a police shooting in Belton that left one man dead Friday afternoon.

Officers with the Belton Police Department were called to the 16000 block of Rebecca Lane around 10 a.m. Friday on a welfare check for a man reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis, according to a news release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Officers contacted the man, who reportedly refused officer assistance, according to the news release. At approximately 12:25 p.m., officers were dispatched to the same address after receiving reports that the man was threatening someone at the residence with a knife.

At 12:30 p.m., officers were speaking with the individual who made the report when the man exited the residence with a knife, according to the news release. He allegedly ran toward officers.

The officers retreated, but the man allegedly continued to pursue one of them, according to the news release. At 12:35 p.m., the officer fired shots, striking the man.

It’s unclear how many shots were fired. A knife was recovered from the scene, the release stated.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the news release. No officers were injured.
