Boy under 5 critically injured in Kansas City East Side apartment shooting

A child under the age of 5 was critically injured in a shooting at an apartment complex in the Ashland Ridge neighborhood on Kansas City’s East Side Wednesday morning, a police spokesman said.

Shortly after 10 a.m., dispatchers sent officers to investigate a reported shooting at the Villa Park apartments in the 4000 block of Willow Avenue, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department.

When officers arrived at the complex, they were taken to an apartment where they found the young boy suffering from a gunshot wound, DiMartino said. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Detectives and crime scene investigators arrived at the apartments and were gathering witness statements and evidence, along with any possible surveillance video.

Investigators are working to determine the circumstances that led up to the shooting and the victim being struck by gunfire, DiMartino said. Further details were not released.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
