Johnson County man gets 27 years for 2024 double homicide in KC’s Northeast area

A 21-year-old Johnson County man was sentenced to 27 years in prison for a fatal double shooting near Maple Park in Kansas City’s Northeast area last year, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.

A Jackson County jury in August found Jared Catarino of Overland Park guilty of two counts each of voluntary manslaughter, armed criminal action, and stealing a firearm in the killings of 22-year-old Jimmy Bowman and 15-year-old Antonio Frazier Jr.

Following the jurors’ recommendation, Jackson County Judge Adam Caine sentenced Catarino to 12 years in prison for the two manslaughter convictions, 3 years for each of the armed criminal action convictions, and a year for each of the stealing of a firearm conviction, according to court documents.

After Caine ordered which sentences would run consecutively and which would run concurrently, the resulting prison term is 27 years, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Before sentencing, Caine denied Catarino’s motion for acquittal or a new trial.

Last month, co-defendant 19-year-old Austin C. Stiles pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree felony murder and two counts of armed criminal action for his role in the killings. He was sentenced to a total prison term of 15 years.

According to court documents, the double homicide occurred about 7 p.m. on Sept. 18, 2024, in the 300 block of Maple Boulevard in the Pendleton Heights neighborhood. Both Bowman and Frazier were pronounced dead at the scene.

The killings stemmed from a robbery that occurred the day before, according to court documents. Stiles allegedly told police that they plotted to rob the victims by luring them to the area under the pretense of arranging a gun sale.

Prosecutors alleged Catarino was the one who had fired the shots.
