Warrensburg man charged after leading sheriff’s deputies on high-speed chase
A Warrensburg man is facing aggravated fleeing charges after leading Cass County sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase south of Harrisonville Wednesday.
David Wilson faces one count each of aggravated fleeing a stop or detention, possession of a controlled substance and tampering with a motor vehicle, according to a Cass County charging document.
Around 1 p.m. on Oct. 22, camera systems detected a black Nissan Altima with a stolen license plate traveling northbound on Interstate 49 near 347th Street, according to a probable cause statement in support of Wilson’s arrest.
A deputy with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded and attempted to pull the vehicle over, the statement said. The vehicle did not pull over, and a pursuit ensued.
The Nissan traveled on northbound I-49 at speeds over 120 mph, according to the probable cause statement, before exiting the interstate, when a box containing a silver pistol was thrown from the vehicle.
The vehicle took the exit at Commercial Street, continuing through a stop sign and reentering northbound I-49, according to the probable cause statement. The vehicle traveled northbound on I-49 before exiting at Mechanic Street.
The Nissan traveled at speeds up to 100 mph in a 35-mph zone, the statement said. The vehicle headed toward 291 Highway, running through a red light. The driver tossed a black lunch box full of drug paraphernalia from the vehicle.
Wilson continued to travel at high speeds up , eventually making it back to I-49, before losing control while attempting to pass another vehicle.
The Nissan went into the median, going airborne and ramping off a hill, becoming inoperable, according to the probable cause statement. Wilson and a female occupant were taken into custody.
In an interview with deputies, Wilson said he didn’t know why he ran from deputies, the statement said. He told deputies he was unaware the vehicle was stolen.
In a Feb. 2024 investigation led by The Star, reporters found that police departments in the KC metro engage in over three vehicle pursuits per day on average.
Wilson is set to appear for a bond review hearing on Oct. 29, according to Cass County court records.
