Independence man charged in fatal stabbing, apparently over Chief’s sweatshirt

A man is in custody following a fatal stabbing in Independence Friday, reportedly over a sweatshirt.

Trey C. Parker faces one count each of second-degree murder and armed criminal action, according to a criminal complaint filed in Jackson County.

Independence police officers were dispatched to the 900 block of East 23rd Street at 8:05 p.m. Friday on reports of a stabbing, department spokesperson Officer Bryan Conley said in a press release Tuesday.

There, officers found Anthony Myers, 45, suffering from “an apparent stab wound,” Conley said. Paramedics found Myers at a car wash, according to a probable cause statement in support of Parker’s arrest.

Myers was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, Conley said.

At the car wash, a witness identified Myers and pointed out a residence where Myers reportedly lived, according to the probable cause statement.

In an interview with police, court documents state the witness said Myers was friends with Parker. Both men and the witness were aware that Parker’s mother was having a garage sale, which the witness helped with.

After the garage sale, court documents state Myers, Parker, the witness and an unidentified man made plans to go to an area casino. While the witness and the unidentified man were getting a vehicle ready to leave, Myers and Parker began to argue about a sweatshirt Myers was wearing, which belonged to Parker.

The witness then witnessed a physical altercation between the men, according to the probable cause statement. When Myers entered the vehicle, he told the witness Parker had stabbed him and he needed to go to the hospital.

In an interview with police, court documents state that Parker’s mother told officers she witnessed Parker in “a heated confrontation” with Myers over a red Kansas City Chiefs sweatshirt that Myers was wearing. She said Myers was “taunting” Parker.

The woman told investigators she did not see Parker attack Myers, but that Parker later told her he had a knife and “barely tapped” Myers “to get him to back off,” according to the probable cause statement.

Court documents allege surveillance footage captured from the residence corroborates the incident.

After a “multi-day manhunt,” investigators arrested Trey Parker Monday evening in Independence, Conley said.

Parker is being held on a $250,000 cash bond, Conley said.
