Public not in danger as bomb threat is cleared at KU Medical Center

Officials deemed there is no threat to the public Monday after a bomb threat was called in at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Officers with the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department were dispatched to assist hospital police at the University of Kansas Medical Center around 6:40 p.m. Monday on reports of a bomb threat, according to a press release from KCKPD Capt. Osvaldo Navarro.

Officers affiliated with the hospital told KCKPD investigators an individual arrived at the entrance to the emergency room with what they were told was an explosive device, Navarro said.

KCKPD officers set a perimeter and the department’s bomb unit was called to the scene, according to the press release. The device was determined to be non-explosive.

No injuries were sustained during the incident, and measures were taken to protect those in the hospital while officers investigated, Angela Frizzo, a spokesperson for the medical center, told The Star in an email Monday evening.

There is no danger to the public at this time, Navarro said.

The University of Kansas Medical Center police department will investigate the incident.
