One person injured in deputy-involved shooting in north Kansas City
Clay County sheriff’s deputies shot and injured a man who they said was armed with a knife and lunched at deputies, in north Kansas City, Saturday afternoon.
The officer-involved shooting occurred near North Oak Trafficway and Northeast 50th Terrace around 2:30 p.m., according to a press release from Clay County Sheriff’s Office public relations manager Sarah Boyd.
No deputies were injured in the incident, and the person the deputies shot “appears to have non-life-threatening wounds,” Boyd said.
The shooting occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. within the Kansas City limits. The name of the injured man has not been released by police.
According to a preliminary report from the Kansas City Police Department, which is investigating the shooting, KCPD officers were called to a reported disturbance involving a man armed with a large knife in the shopping center at the intersection of NE Englewood Road and North Oak Trafficway.
By the time police arrived the man had left the scene. Police said that a description of the man was given to police dispatch and broadcasted out to other patrol officers, including the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
Police, in a second press release Saturday evening, said that a Clay County sheriff’s deputy, who was patrolling the area of NE 50th St and North Oak Trafficway “located the described suspect involved in the disturbance.”
According to the release, from KCPD spokesperson, Officer Alayna Gonzalez, the man pulled a “large knife,” from his waistband and ran north on North Oak Trafficway. The deputy chased him and additional deputies were called to assist, police said.
Police said several verbal commands instructing the man to drop the knife were given to the fleeing man, but he did not comply and proceeded to run into a wooded area. Sheriff’s K-9 units were called to assist officers in the pursuit, according to the press release.
Police said the man stopped but did not drop the knife. The release said the man, while holding the knife, “ran towards the deputies.” Two Clay County deputies fired their duty weapons striking the man.
“Deputies on scene immediately began rendering medical aid until EMS responded,” police said. A knife was recovered at the scene. Police said the investigation is ongoing..
