Funeral arrangements announced for slain Kansas City, Kansas police officer

Officials have finalized funeral services for slain Kansas City, Kansas police officer Hunter Simoncic.

Simoncic, 26, was struck and killed by a man driving a stolen truck early Tuesday morning in the 7200 block of State Avenue.

Dennis Edward Mitchell III, 31, faces capital murder, among other charges, for his alleged role in Simoncic’s death.

Simoncic’s funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Children’s Mercy Park located at 1 Sporting Way, Kansas City, Kansas, 66109, according to a press release from Kansas City, Kansas Police Department Public Information Officer Nancy Chartrand.

The service will be open to the public, Chartrand said. Parking lots will open at 7:30 a.m. and the stadium will open its doors at 8 a.m.

Those attending the service should approach the stadium from State Avenue, Chartrand said. Public parking will be available on the south side of the stadium in Blue Lot 2 located at the Kansas Speedway.

Village West Parkway and France Family Drive will be closed to the public, Chartrand said.

A law enforcement processional will take place after the service’s conclusion, Chartrand said. The processional’s route will be posted at a later time.

A candlelight vigil will be held for Simoncic at 7:30 p.m. Thursday outside the Unified Government Municipal Building located at 700 North 7th St. in Kansas City, Kansas, according to the Wyandotte County Unified Government website.

At 5:30 p.m., 7th Street from Ann Avenue to Barnett Avenue will be closed in preparation for the vigil, according to the website.

The website says public parking will be available on the west side of Memorial hall in lot two and on the east side of the municipal building in lots three and E.

The Kansas City, Kansas Fraternal Order of Police Lodge Four has set up a memorial fund for Simoncic, according to the website. Donations can be made to KCK FOP Memorial Fund c/o Simoncic Family.

All donations can be dropped off at any Public Safety Credit Union location.
