Man dies after being found shot in wooded area of Kansas City park
A man is dead after being found shot in a Kansas City park Wednesday morning.
Police responded just before 8 a.m. on reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they were directed to the woods in the back of Blue Valley Park, according to Sgt. Philip DiMartino, spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department.
An adult male was found in the woods suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics responded and transported the man to the hospital where he died shortly after.
“We’re still working on the preliminary part of this to figure out what led up to the shots being fired and the victim losing their life,” DiMartino said.
Witnesses at the scene provided information on a possible subject of interest and a vehicle description, according to DiMartino. That person was taken into custody nearby.
A K-9 officer was at the scene to help officers sniff out shell casings in the woods, which DiMartino noted as crucial.
“This is a tragedy,” he said. “If there’s a bright spot in this tragedy, it’s the fact that we got that information quickly. We utilized our technology and our patrol cops could go be cops, make an arrest.”
This marks Kansas City’s 107th homicide this year, compared to 104 at this time last year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.
