Man dies following police shooting at Kansas City intersection
A man died Thursday evening following a police shooting near the intersection of The Paseo and Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard in Kansas City Thursday afternoon, law enforcement said.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the shooting, which involved two Kansas City police officers, said Lt. Andy Bell with the highway patrol.
Police were called to the scene around 2:10 p.m. after a 911 caller reported that a man who was armed with a gun had pointed the weapon at an ambulance, Bell said.
Officers arrived at 2:21 p.m., contacted the man and began giving him commands to take him into custody, Bell said. The man allegedly did not comply with commands from officers, and at 2:23 p.m., officers reported shots had been fired, Bell said.
Asked whether the man had pointed the weapon at officers, Bell said that information would be part of the investigation.
The man was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died. No officers were injured.
Police tape blocked off the intersection as crime scene investigators worked there Thursday afternoon. Several evidence markers were on the ground near a bus stop, and what appeared to be a pistol could be seen lying in the street a short distance from the bus stop.
Bell said a weapon was recovered from the scene.
Traffic was snarled in the area as a large law enforcement presence gathered at the intersection.
