Leavenworth County man accused of shooting sons found incompetent to stand trial
A Leavenworth man accused of shooting his two sons to death and fleeing to Oklahoma in 2020 was found incompetent to stand trial Thursday, according to a news release from the Leavenworth County Attorney’s Office.
Donald Ray Jackson Jr., 45, is charged with one count of capital murder for his alleged role in the shooting deaths of his two sons, 14-year-old Logan and 12-year-old Austin. The two were found shot at Jackson’s home at 14970 Hillside Road on Oct. 24, 2020, after one of the boys didn’t show up for soccer practice, according to previous Star reporting.
One of the boys was found with a single gunshot wound, while the other had two, according to a court affidavit.
Amber Alerts were issued in multiple states after officers discovered the pair’s younger sisters, 7 and 3, were missing.
Hours later, Jackson was arrested in Beckham County, Oklahoma. The two girls were with him. A .40-caliber handgun was found in Jackson’s car at the time of his arrest.
Jackson was found “not competent to stand trial & not likely to become competent in foreseeable future,” according to Leavenworth County court documents. The case will be on hold until Jackson can be further evaluated.
