A 17-year-old Gladstone girl died in a one-vehicle accident early Tuesday on Interstate 35 about six miles outside Lathrop in Clinton County, Mo.

Anna M. Bishop was southbound at the 44-mile marker just after midnight when her 2000 Nissan Maxima skidded across the roadway and off the west side of the road, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The driver’s side door struck a mile marker post, and the car went into a ditch and up the embankment.

The Maxima overturned several times, ejecting Bishop. The car then burst into flames, the patrol reported.

Bishop, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

She was entering her senior year at Oak Park High School and was a cheerleader and active in choir, theater and other activities, according to school officials.

The school tweeted, “Sad day for the OPFamily and those close to Anna. Be with family and friends today and share joyful memories of our friend. #PrayersForAnna

Grief counselors are scheduled to be available at the school Wednesday, when classes begin for the year.
