A Kansas Bureau of Investigation special agent shot a 25-year-old man during an arrest outside a Kansas City, Kansas, Supermarket Wednesday evening, according to a news release from the KBI.

The injured man was taken to a hospital where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover, according to the news release from Melissa Underwood, communications director for the KBI.

Agents were not injured in the incident, Underwood said. Following the shooting, the special agent involved was evaluated medically and then released.

The shooting occurred at about 8:50 p.m. at El Rio Bravo Supermarket at 11 S. 10th Street. While KBI agents attempted to arrest the man, he was shot, the Underwood said.

About 25 minutes after the shooting, the KBI requested the assistance of the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department and for its detectives to investigate the shooting. Officers and detectives responded to the supermarket.

Details of the shooting, including whether the man was armed and the circumstances that warranted the use of deadly force, were not released by either the KBI or the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

The investigation aims to discover the events leading up to the police shooting, according to a news release from Nancy Chartrand, a KCK police spokeswoman. The investigation’s findings are expected to take several weeks to complete.

Meanwhile, the special agent who fired the shot will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
