A child was critically injured after being struck by an SUV while cross the street Thursday evening at a park in Kansas City’s Northeast area, a police spokeswoman said.

The injury crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m. near the 9th and Van Brunt Athletic Fields Park in the 4800 block of East Ninth Street in the Lykins neighborhood of Kansas City, Officer Alayna Gonzalez with the Kansas City Police Department said in an email.

At the time of the crash, the child, who is under 10 years old, was crossing Night Street from north to south at Brighton Avenue. A silver SUV heading west on Ninth, struck the child.

The child was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, Gonzalez said. The crash was not a hit-and-run incident.

As the temperatures rise, there will undoubtedly be more pedestrians and bicyclists traveling the city streets, especially around parks and other areas designated for outdoor activities, Gonzalez said. This will require drivers to pay more attention during the day and night.

“We would always like the opportunity to remind anyone operating a motor vehicle that it is absolutely imperative to be aware of any and all surroundings,” Gonzalez said.

“We can collectively lead to fewer pedestrian involved vehicular accidents by ensuring we are abiding by posted traffic signs, to include speed limits and stop signs, while also keeping our attention on the roadway and free of distractions like talking on the phone, texting, reading, etc.”
