A Kansas City man has been charged in connection with a fatal stabbing Wednesday night.

Theron Savage has been charged with second degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and first degree assault after a disturbance left one woman dead and another injured at an apartment in the Red Bridge South neighborhood.

Officers responded to the disturbance about 11:30 p.m. at an apartment at the Coach House Apartments & Townhomes in the 600 block of East Minor Drive, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.

The victims were taken to the hospital.

One victim, identified as 22-year-old Dayteonna Thompson and Savage’s girlfriend, was pronounced dead. The other victim had non-life threatening injuries.

What happened in the apartment

When questioned by police, Savage allegedly said he did not remember much of the situation, but said he had a verbal altercation with Thompson over their relationship and denied any recollection of using the knife or answering the door with a knife in hand, according to court documents.

According to court documents, as officers moved toward the apartment’s front door, Savage allegedly opened it while holding a sharp object and shut it on the officers. He was then shot at with a bean bag round and jumped from the back balcony.

Officers then found him at the apartment’s leasing office, but Savage allegedly did not listen to orders to get on the ground. He later left the building and began to approach officers and then backed away towards the building.

Due to his lack of compliance, an officer discharged their taser and took him into custody, according to court documents.

The surviving victim told officers she heard a bang and her daughter yell to call the police. Savage then allegedly came out and grabbed the phone from her hand and cut her chest, threatening to kill her.

According to her, Savage had been in the apartment for most of the day in Thompson’s room and recalled seeing the knife earlier on the bed.

Savage told officers he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, but that he had not been prescribed anything and was not supposed to be taking medication.

Savage is being held with no bond.
