Police surrounded a Kansas City home Wednesday after a man allegedly threatened a woman with an ax.

The incident began about 3 p.m. when a woman called police to her house in the 8300 block of East 110th Street and reported that a young man who was staying at the home “lunged at her with an ax,” according to police.

When officers arrived, the man refused to cooperate or leave the house. While police treated the incident as a standoff, officers believed that the man was tearing up the inside of the house with the ax.

After negotiations with police, the man exited and was detained. Police said they transported him to a hospital for evaluation.

The woman who lived at the house was not injured, police said.
