Independence police are asking for the public’s help in locating a car that may have been involved in a hit-and-run crash with a man and his dog over the weekend.

A 51-year-old Independence man was injured in a crash while walking his dog just after 10 p.m. Saturday, the Independence Police Department said in a news release. Officers responded near U.S. 40 Highway and 36th Street after a report of someone in the street who looked like they had been hit by a vehicle.

Officers found the man and his dog on the sidewalk, said Sgt. Jeff Buck, of the IPD traffic safety unit. The man sustained serious injuries due to the crash and was transported by ambulance to a hospital.

Police have not yet provided an update in the man’s condition. It is unknown if the dog was injured in the crash.

Detectives have identified a possible suspect vehicle in connection with the crash. Video surveillance showed a burgundy Chrysler 300 stop briefly, then flee the scene, Buck said.

Buck said the Chrysler would likely have front-end damage.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to call the Independence Police Department at 816-325-7300 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
